JURY COMMENTARY
Coliving and cohabitation serve to increase density by reorganizing the layouts of existing buildings for more efficient spaces, and to include shared amenities for larger groups of inhabitants. The designer of this project, quoting STAR strategies + Architecture, states: “the real revolution in housing is indoors.” The proposal rearranges the interior layout of a typical london housing block, as the designer claims, to mirror the growing variety of job positions and of family arrangements. The ways in which people organize their urban lives to afford housing “is to be more closely investigated, as this brings along significant changes in terms of housing cultures, patterns of solidarity/community, and socio-spatial organization.” The design offers a selection of flexible interior organizational components – including the bathroom core, the equipped wall fitted with shelving and insulation, and movable partitions. The layout accounts for a mixture of user profiles, from the single adult student, to the elderly couple, to the divorced parent with child. The jury wonders, in what other building typologies can this project be applied?

*The work is a result of and ongoing design studio-based research (at Politecnico di Milano) over the last three years; colleagues involved: Massimo Bricocoli (Urban and Housing Policy), Giovanni Hänninen (Ethno-photography); Rodrigo Pemjean (Architectural Representation); Gennaro Postiglione (Architecture of Interiors) and Stefania Sabatinelli (Urban Sociology).

Utopia reloaded

A+P Smithsons’ Robin Hood Gardens

archdaily.com © Alison and Peter Smithson

Lab-int/2013: news

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

Aedas unveiled first images of their Robin Hood Gardens ‘Regeneration’… and they look very far from being convincing. On bdonline more images and an article explaining that:

The new homes will be used to ‘decant’ residents from the existing Robin Hood Gardens, which is due to be demolished in a future phase of the project…

Lab-int/2013 should keep an eye on this…

ASthought

architecture from concept to built form

Monday 8th October 2012 – h. 9:15 aula C
Facoltà di Architettura e Società
Politecnico di Milano

Main goal is to describe the design process, the architectural solutions and the detailing choices of a built work in a chronological order. The sequence of selected iconography for each step will be arranged into specific categories (typology, materials, elements, etc.), according standard architecture manuals, and explained through captions (140 characters in order to be able to become twitter posts). An introduction presenting the work ‘facts’, a short description of 1000 words and an essay selected among what already published, will constitute the main textual sections.

Follow the project on: asthought.polimi-cooperation.org

Ma(se)-Riabitiamo

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

Adaptive Re-use/Diploma course

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

“ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences/School of Architecture”

This year the Course for Diploma ‘Adaptive re-use’ (Facoltà di Architettura e Società/Politecnico di Milano) will focus its interests on specific topics connected with the on-going research project MeLa (European Museums in an Age of Migrations) investigating the new role Museums and Exhibitions could/should play in a multy-cultural society where questions such as Identity and Citizenship are strongly impacted by phenomena like the Europanization of Europe and the massive presence of permanent migrants in what we consider to be ‘our’ Europe or ‘our’ Nation or ‘our’ City or even ‘our’ territory. Here you can download a brief project presentation.

Another object of interest is the European XX Century Conflict Heritage – tangible and intangible legacies wars left behind – with a special focus on the Atlantic Wall and WWII period. Here you can download a brief presentation about how we think to approach this difficult theme.

Students at POLIMI (Italian or Foreigners) interested in developing their Diploma in such a field, could take contact with me (Gennaro Postiglione) using contact blog-mail in the ‘about page’.
