The signs of armed conflict are the backbones which cross and could also unify Europe, signs defining what is now called the “Conflict archaeological landscape”. This book presents a rich and unique iconography and a selection of essays for the first time providing a new critical approach to the Atlantikwall, proposing its interpretation as one of the major Western military archaeological landscapes.

Contributions, among others, by: Diller & Scofidio, Guido Guidi, Luca Basso Peressut.

Lab-Int-2012

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

Today we have presented to the students the subject of our next Design Lab, which will take off in March 2012. We are going to deal with the refurbishment of a dismissed Milanese petrol station that was designed and built in the beginning of the 50’s by Mario Bacciocchi. The building represents a very precious heritage for the city and for its owner, Eni S.p.A. As we started to research about the history of the building, and the company, we realized how intriguing this project might become if all the issues around it will be taken into account…

Interior Arcadias

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Interior Arcadias by Mark Pimlott from ADA Rotterdam on Vimeo.

Fragments of nature captured in an interior, particularly when they are alien or exotic, provide pleasure to its occupants. When brought indoors, nature imposes its own character and order, and the interior typically concedes in a fundamental way to its contents, and loses much of its substance. The story of such an interior is bound up with Enlightenment-born ideas regarding the categorization, possession and domination of the world’s natural contents. The nineteenth century witnessed an explosion of expressions of these ideas, which yielded the various building typologies we continue to be familiar with: the crystal palace, the arcade, the department store, the mall, and the atrium.

Q+A> Rem Koolhaas

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

Kiyonori Kikutake, Statiform Structure Module, 1972.
Kiyonori Kikutake

From: The architects’ Newspaper
Sounding weary with focusing on his own positions and prominence and energized by researching Japan in the 60s and 70s, Rem Koolhaas came down for coffee at the Carlyle Hotel to talk to AN about his new book Project Japan: Metabolism Talks (Taschen), a six-year project undertaken with Swiss critic and historian Hans Ulrich Obrist to interview the founders and thinkers of what the architect calls “the first non-Western avant-garde movement in architecture” and the Dutch architect’s search for a more meaningful engagement between architecture and societies.
