Market project in the U-Boot bunker of Saint-Nazaire, France
[by Valeria Bormolini, Claudia Brunelli & Margherita Parati, 2007–2008]
The thesis investigates the reuse of the U-Boot bunker in Saint-Nazaire, one of the most monumental structures of the Atlantic Wall, reimagining it as a public space hosting a multicultural market. Through the study of the site’s historical memory, its monumental scale and its urban role, the project proposes spatial strategies that open the bunker to the city and transform it into a permeable, accessible place of exchange. The intervention aims to give new meaning to a structure originally built for war, activating renewed relationships between communities, the port landscape and everyday forms of inhabitation.
