WORKHOME

WORKHOME
a Community Strengthening Strategy
[by Barbara Srcek, 2025]

This Master thesis, conceived as design-oriented research, investigates the theory and practice of unconventional and affordable housing typologies. These typologies provide a useful tool in addressing the challenges in the context of the contemporary housing climate. Through an analysis of the history of collective living, the study concludes that collective housing typology does not necessarily foster community. Rather, community emerges where common goals are present, which is a defining characteristic of the Workhome typology, a concept that integrates living and working spaces within the same building. The theoretical framework materializes in the form of an unconventional and affordable housing project located in the metropolitan area of San Donato Milanese.
