IT’S ABOUT TIME
temporariness as a new paradigm to rethink co-living
[by Isabella Coppola, Gabriele Dinardo, 2025]
Over the past decade, the term coliving has emerged and become increasingly widespread in cities, presenting itself as a response to the new issues of contemporary living. However, this cannot be considered a valid response to the housing crisis but, at most, the result of a process of branding the concept of a community of urban nomads. The objective of this research is to adapt the concept of coliving companies within the context of temporary collective housing for people at risk of housing emergencies. Through bibliographic analysis and a more specific examination of existing coliving cases, we can understand the replicable virtuous mechanisms and where, on the other hand, spatial and architectural configurations are primarily the result of speculative intent. The challenge of this thesis is to propose a system in which these two dimensions can coexist, ensuring a fair distribution of economic flow, a dignified and affordable residence that is not compromised in quality.
