BUILDING ON THE BUILT

BUILDING ON THE BUILT
a view on typological affordances
[by Virginia Capone, 2023]

The design project deals with the transformation of a 1990ies semi-public mixed-use building in the industrial suburb of Gratkorn in the northern Greater Graz area. The main purpose of the design is to unfold the complexity of an urban object through the analysis and work on the typology, so as to demonstrate the flexibility that comes precisely from its strong typological matrix and therefore its relevance today. The theme of typology, understood as the permanence of essential elements in a series of architectural artifacts, represents the key to analyzing a posteriori the existing architectural artifact on which the design process focuses. Building on the built, according to what has been stated, is not only a necessity to which today’s architecture is inevitably obliged to respond, but above all, it aims at putting back together the pieces of a larger complex historical, social and cultural context of an architectural artifact and its physical context, to delineate its extraordinary uniqueness.
