BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH DESIGN

BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH DESIGN
An Evaluation of a Co-Living Project in Milan
[by Fernanda Arriaga Navarro, Guillermo Pérez-Banuet Farell, 2023]

The research was influenced by work developed in the Architecture and Urban Studies Department at Politecnico di Milano on new ways of housing in the contemporary world. It examines collective living as a response to current issues in Italy and Europe, including lack of affordable housing, rising rental prices, an ageing population and increasing inequality. Collective housing is not new, but interest in new forms is growing. The demand for affordable housing is especially high in Milan. The research tests whether collective living can be applied within the context of social housing, as a response to real needs and to regulations that have proved obsolete. The flexibility of an existing building originally designed as social housing becomes the field of experimentation, exploring mixed-use typologies and the relationship between private and public space.
