GratosoglioGROUNDzero2020
[Proff. Gennaro Postiglione, Paola Briata, Giovanni Hänninen; academic year 2019-2020]
This studio-based course, held at the end of a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, brings students back to the “roots of places” through direct observation of everyday interactions between people, spaces, and practices, keeping design initially in the background. Titled Gratosoglio Ground Zero, it focuses on understanding “what is already there” and specifically on the ground floors of a large public housing estate in southern Milan. Through fieldwork and participant observation, students explore how space shapes social life and how attentive listening to spatial cultures can inform more sustainable design. The project takes place in the Gratosoglio neighbourhood, engaging directly with local residents and associations to highlight the area’s challenges and potential.
