UN VILLAGGIO PER IL CINEMA
Esportare la mediterraneità
[by Alessia Ermirio, Giulia Morabito, 2018]
While investigating the relationship between the roots of a place and the future of its inhabitants, the thesis aims to propose new spaces for experiences of cultural exchange and dialogue. The intention here is to design a film village where cinema becomes the driving force of an urban regeneration that starts from culture. The idea is to create new scenarios where cinema is produced, enjoyed and discussed. Spaces that bring together experts in the field, students and citizens. The project represents a challenge to social integration and provides new engine for the renaissance of a land that is currently not sufficiently promoted. The research investigates the space of the cinema in urban, architectural and social terms. The project aims to recover this role in a context of negligence such as the one of the Costa Viola. The proposal provides for the re-functionalization of a coastal area located near Palmi (RC), in the heart of the Costa Viola. It consists of the redevelopment of Municipal properties of great historical-cultural value (such as the Villa of the writer Leonida Repaci) and the design of a new structure able to permanently host film students and temporary filmmakers and directors for the “Gioia Film Fest”. The opportunity to collaborate with the young Italian-American director Jonas Carpignano… is a valuable resource for our research work. Jonas’ films depict a varied and multicultural Italy, and investigate themes close to those of architecture, such as integration and interaction. Carpignano is also the artistic director of the “Gioia Film Fest”, an event that aims to bring cinema to ordinary people and to involve Italian and international directors in a broader cultural debate. The program has significant repercussions, as it aims to create an international network that exports Made-in-Italy cinema abroad, allowing students and experts in the sector to know and enjoy the unique scenarios of southern Italy.
