The Square Circle

July 5th, 2018

The aim of our project is to transform a place of transit into a resting place.
The intervention area is via Ampere, in front of the main entrance of the Politecnico di Milano, a crowded and passing place; students, professors, bystanders pass by us every day…
We asked ourselves how to invert this scheme, that is to give the passers-by the opportunity to stop, have a conversation, have a lunch break in this place, seeing it also under another point of view.
Our proposal is to equip the passers-by with a polystyrene cube cut by us with pre-established measures (50 x 50 x 50 cm) and draw a circle with a removable spray paint whose size depends on the number of people aggregated (for example one person 1 meter, 2 people 2 meters).
The polystyrene cubes and the spray paint circles have the same color that depends on the number of people who join together.
The goal is to obtain an area where the addition of new furniture (seats and circles on the floor), make sure that the same is enjoyed as a square where you can sit, eat lunch, entertain, but also transit.
During the project we decided to mount cameras in strategic points to have a final timelaps, a report of participation and modification of the space.
It’s interesting to see how and where the people taking part decide to stop; it is useful for planning a future intervention to enhance the square in front of the main entrance of the Polytechnic.
