Biennale-Sessions_2018/6-8JUL: Expansion of Schroder house

July 4th, 2018

Schroder house is located in Utrecht in the Netherlands.

It was designed by Gerrit Rietveld in 1924. It is an example of the De Stijl movement.

Now it is a UNESCO heritage museum house.

This is the expansion of the Schroder house.

It is a literary café, a complementary function to that of the house-museum.

The main feature is the suspended floor that delimits a more reserved space reached by a suspended stair, formed by vertical and horizontal wooden strips.

Looking at the facade you can see the regular scan of the windows and of the (supporting) structure that defines the module.

The windows create a visual relationship with the original house.
